Essential amino acids (abbreviated to EAA) are essential components of life. Essential means that the body cannot produce or synthesise these amino acids itself and must therefore take them in through food or appropriate food supplements. The essential amino acids include L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, L-lysine, L-phenylalanine, L-threonine, L-tryptophan and L-methionine.
The greatest importance lies in their function as protein building blocks. Furthermore, they are involved in the formation of the body's own substances (such as hormones and messenger substances) and are needed for wound healing, energy supply and for muscle growth. • Threonine serves the body primarily as a starting material for the synthesis of proteins of the immune system
• Tryptophan serves as a precursor for the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin
• BCAA (leucine, isoleucine, valine): These amino acids are components of muscle proteins, which is why they are particularly popular in bodybuilding
