L-Carnitine
- f& Suitable for vegans
- t& usual recommended dose of 3 g
What is L-carnitine actually?
Chemically speaking, L-carnitine is a ß-hydroxy-γ-trimethyl-aminobutyric acid. Carnitine is produced in the body from the two amino acids Lysine and methioninewith the help of various nutrients such as vitamin B6, niacin, Vitamin C and Iron formed.
How does L-carnitine work?
L-Carnitine plays an important role in metabolism as it transports long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion of the cell. Energy production takes place in the mitochondria, which is why they are also referred to as the power plants of the cells.
In addition to carbohydrates, fats are our most important sources of energy. Therefore, carnitine is found in almost all tissues and body fluids. The highest concentration (about 80%) is in skeletal muscle.
When and how should L-carnitine be taken?
We recommend a daily intake of 3 g per day. Whether taken as powder or capsules does not matter. However, due to the slightly fishy smell, many people prefer to take the odorless Carnitine capsules. Athletes should take L-carnitine about 30-60 minutes before training. Ideally it should be taken on an empty stomach. Anyone who suffers from sleep disorders should take carnitine in the morning/noon, as the substance can have a stimulating effect.
Are there any risks when taking it?
L-Carnitine is a water-soluble molecule that is excreted in the urine upon increased intake. Taking high doses (more than 4 g per day) is not recommended as this can cause gastrointestinal problems (e.g. diarrhea).
Which form or preparation is the best?
We use L-carnitine in our product in the form of Carnipure®. This high-quality form of L-carnitine tartrate is 100% vegan. The brand name Carnipure® from Lonza stands for the best possible quality. The Swiss life sciences company Lonza is one of the world's leading and most reliable suppliers of L-carnitine.
Occurrence and supply with a vegan lifestyle
Carnitine is mainly found in animal products such as meat and dairy products. Plants, on the other hand, usually only have low concentrations. Can a carnitine deficiency occur with a vegan diet? Since carnitine can be produced by the body itself - So it's non-essential - vegans and vegetarians don't need to fear a deficiency if they eat a balanced diet. Supplementation is therefore not necessary, but can be useful in certain situations (e.g. in competitive sports).
