What is L-lysine actually?
L-Lysine is one of the essential amino acids (short EAA) and cannot be produced by the body itself. Lysine, together with threonine, has a special position among the EAAs. The two amino acids are also considered “absolutely indispensable” designated. In contrast to the other essential amino acids, they cannot be transaminated from their α-keto acids. This means that they cannot be recovered by transferring the amino group again.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an amount of 30 to 64 mg of L-lysine per kg of body weight should be consumed per day. Most plant-based foods are low in lysine. Lysine is the limiting amino acid in many plant proteins (e.g. grains such as wheat or corn) and reduces their biological value. But there are exceptions: rice or legumes such as peas, lentils or soy are rich in lysine.
How does L-lysine work?
Lysine plays an important role in building connective tissue. Connective tissue consists of collagen and elastic fibers, which consist of the structural proteins collagen and elastin. For their development and networking, the body needs, among other things: Lysine. For strong connective tissue, the amino acid must be absorbed in sufficient quantities through food.
