Why creatine causes weight gain

No other sports supplement has been the subject of as many studies as Creatine. Especially in bodybuilding it is impossible to imagine life without this substance. However, there is also a lot of ignorance circulating online. You can often find headlines such as "Creatine makes you fat" or "Creatine makes the body bloat". In today's blog post, you can find out everything you need to know about water retention with creatine supplementation

Creatine and water retention

Creatine promotes muscle building and allows you to lift heavier weights. It also makes your muscles look fuller. The reason for this is that the body stores more water in the muscle cells through creatine supplementation. The muscles stretch due to the influx of water, causing them to gain volume. Around 1 to 2 % of body weight is drawn into the muscles in the form of additional water. For a man weighing 80 kg, this results in a weight gain of around 1 kg. However, it is important to note that this is only water and not fat.

But anyone who thinks that the influx of water gives you a swollen appearance is mistaken. This is because the water is bound directly in the muscle and not between the skin and muscle. Muscle development is also not hindered by the stored water.

When you stop taking creatine, the water also disappears from the body. This happens all by itself, but it can take several weeks for the water to be completely eliminated from the body. During this time, it is normal to sweat more.

In comparison: salt binds much more water and can store hundreds of times its own weight. For example, 1 gram of salt binds around 100 ml of water. This is stored between the muscle and skin.

Creatine monohydrate

Our creatine monohydrate consists of 100% pure, super-soluble and ultra-fine creatine monohydrate. It has a neutral flavour and is therefore also suitable in combination with other sports supplements. It contains no additives and therefore ensures optimal absorption.
