Omega-3 - which fatty acids are important? Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids and include the three main representatives alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These fatty acids are of fundamental importance for the human organism. However, as only a small proportion of DHA and EPA can be synthesised in the body from the ALA commonly found in food, it is crucial to obtain sufficient quantities of these essential fatty acids from food or food supplements.
