Men's health
Men's health is often given short shrift. Men have an unhealthier diet and use stimulants such as alcohol and cigarettes more often than women. This is also one reason why men have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity and type 2 diabetes than women.
Men's nutritional requirements change over the course of their lives - from youth to old age. A balanced and healthy diet is therefore particularly important to support general well-being in the various phases of life and prevent illness.
Nutrients for young men
In adolescence and young adulthood, the focus is on growth, muscle building and sufficient energy intake. Young men therefore need a diet particularly rich in energy and protein during this phase of life. In general, men have a higher protein and energy requirement as they have more muscle mass than women.
Calorie requirements: During this phase of life, men (especially during puberty) need a lot of energy for growth and physical activities. A high calorie intake is therefore important.
Proteins: Men in puberty, physically active men and men who want to build muscle should make sure they have a diet rich in protein. The focus should be on plant-based proteins. Even though meat and meat products are still a popular source of protein, it is no longer necessary to include them in your diet to cover your nutritional requirements. A balanced plant-based diet without unhealthy ingredients such as cholesterol and saturated fatty acids is the best choice.
Micronutrients: Zinc and selenium not only play a central role in young adulthood, but are important in all phases of life. This is because zinc helps to maintain normal testosterone levels in the blood. Testosterone is responsible for the development of the sex organs, sperm production and sexual desire. Selenium contributes to normal sperm formation, among other things.
Nutrients for men in middle adulthood
As we get older, our metabolism changes and our energy requirements decrease somewhat. Nevertheless, a balanced and healthy diet remains essential to prevent illness.
Energy: Energy requirements should be adjusted slightly, otherwise the risk of obesity increases.
Healthy fats: Omega-3 fatty acids promote the health of the cardiovascular system*. The two fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) contribute to the maintenance of *normal blood pressure, normal triglyceride levels in the blood and *normal heart function.
Micronutrients: From around the age of 30, testosterone production in men steadily declines. This is completely normal and does not usually result in any impairments. However, if the testosterone level drops too much, a deficiency can develop. Therefore, it is important to ensure a sufficient supply of zinc.
Nutrients for men in later adulthood (50+)
Not all men in this age group are physically fit and healthy. At this age, metabolic processes slow down and the risk of diseases, particularly of the cardiovascular system, increases.
Many men of this age suffer from obesity and have problems with potency. The reason for this is not only an unhealthy diet, but also the wrong lifestyle. It is important to maintain a balanced and healthy diet rich in fruit, vegetables, wholegrain products and vegetable fats as you get older. A protein-rich diet ( legumes, cereals, nuts) is important to prevent muscle loss and the associated health restrictions. Plenty of exercise in old age and sporting activities can also improve general well-being.
