What does eating vegan actually mean?

Many people immediately think of sacrifice when they hear the word vegan—but that doesn't have to be the case. Vegan simply means no animal products such as meat, fish, milk, eggs, or honey. Instead, fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and delicious plant-based alternatives are served up on your plate.

If going vegan for a whole month is still difficult for you, just start slowly—for example, with individual meals or vegan days. Thanks to many delicious recipes and substitute products, eating vegan is super easy today.

Vegan nutrition in practice – here's how it works:

  • Try plant-based alternatives to burgers, minced meat, etc.
  • Choose legumes, nuts, and whole grains as your protein source
  • Swap cow's milk for plant-based drinks such as oat or soy milk
  • Use bananas, applesauce, or flaxseed as egg substitutes
  • Replace cheese and other dairy products with plant-based alternatives

Many people use the month to try new products, eat more plant-based foods, and reduce their consumption of animal products.

Behind the Veganuary movement is a non-profit organization from the UK that has been active since 2014.The organization operates independently of commercial interests and focuses on providing information and support for a plant-based lifestyle. So if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you should supplement vitamin B12. Vitamin D is also one of the critical micronutrients in Germany, regardless of your diet. Especially in the winter months, the body's own synthesis via the skin is often insufficient, which is why supplementation is advisable. In addition, you should keep an eye on other micronutrients such as omega-3, iron, zinc, and iodine, as these can often be lower in a vegan diet.
