What does eating vegan actually mean?

Many people immediately think of sacrifice when they hear the word vegan—but that doesn't have to be the case. Vegan simply means no animal products such as meat, fish, milk, eggs, or honey. Instead, fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and delicious plant-based alternatives are served up on your plate.

If going vegan for a whole month is still difficult for you, just start slowly—for example, with individual meals or vegan days. Thanks to many delicious recipes and substitute products, eating vegan is super easy today.

Vegan nutrition in practice – here's how it works:

Try plant-based alternatives to burgers, minced meat, etc.
Choose legumes, nuts, and whole grains as your protein source
Swap cow's milk for plant-based drinks such as oat or soy milk
Use bananas, applesauce, or flaxseed as egg substitutes
Replace cheese and other dairy products with plant-based alternatives
Cook fresh more often and try new types of vegetables and fruit
Pack vegan snacks such as protein bars for when you're on the go
Simply make your favorite dishes plant-based
Get inspiration from our vegan recipe ideas

Tip: When shopping, take a quick look at the list of ingredients—vegan labels make choosing super easy.

Do you have questions about Veganuary? We have the answers!

What exactly is Veganuary and why is it so popular?

Veganuary is a non-profit campaign and organization that invites people around the world to go vegan for the entire month of January. The goal is to make it easier to get started with veganism—without any pressure, but with lots of inspiration, delicious recipes, and support. Veganuary is so popular because it sets a clear time frame and fits perfectly with New Year's resolutions. Many people use the month to try new products, eat more plant-based foods, and reduce their consumption of animal products.

Who's behind the Veganuary movement?

Behind the Veganuary movement is a non-profit organization from the UK that has been active since 2014.The organization operates independently of commercial interests and focuses on providing information and support for a plant-based lifestyle. We at nutri+ are also supporting you in Veganuary 2026 with a wide selection of vegan protein products, recipe ideas, and promotions throughout the month.

When does Veganuary start, and do I have to start in January?

Veganuary officially starts in January and runs throughout the month. But you don't necessarily have to start on January 1—you can start anytime in January or even later in the year. However, Veganuary offers a great opportunity, as many brands, restaurants, and stores provide special offers and inspiration during this time—including our Veganuary Shop at nutri+.

How do I stay motivated even after Veganuary?

Set small, realistic goals—for example, three strictly vegan days per week or one vegan breakfast, lunch, or dinner every day. Also, keep your favorite vegan products and recipes ready to make your decisions easier. Our products and recipe ideas will accompany you even after Veganuary and help you stay motivated.

What should I do if I realize that a purely vegan diet is not for me?

No problem—every vegan or vegetarian day counts and is a step in the right direction. Even small changes toward a more plant-based diet have a positive effect on your health, the climate, and animal welfare. We have put together a few tips for you on how you can make your everyday life a little more vegan: Try not to consume animal products every day.

➡️ Occasionally replace meat in recipes with vegan alternatives or legumes.

➡️ Choose a plant-based dish when eating out.

➡️ Regularly replace cheese, milk, or yogurt with plant-based alternatives.

Do I really need supplements during Veganuary?

You don't necessarily need to take dietary supplements during Veganuary itself, provided you eat a balanced and varied diet. However, after Veganuary, if you want to permanently integrate more plant-based foods into your diet, you should keep an eye on a few micronutrients: First and foremost, vitamin B12, as it is found almost exclusively in animal-based foods. So if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you should supplement vitamin B12. Vitamin D is also one of the critical micronutrients in Germany, regardless of your diet. Especially in the winter months, the body's own synthesis via the skin is often insufficient, which is why supplementation is advisable. In addition, you should keep an eye on other micronutrients such as omega-3, iron, zinc, and iodine, as these can often be lower in a vegan diet. You can find suitable vegan supplements in our Good for Vegan Nutrition category.
