Not every form of magnesium is equally effective: While inorganic magnesium such as magnesium oxide has a significantly higher magnesium content, the body cannot absorb it as well. On the other hand, it has a depot function that supplies your body in the long term.

The first signs of magnesium deficiency include non-specific symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, fatigue and general weakness. In advanced stages, a deficiency of calcium and potassium may also occur, accompanied by cardiovascular and neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, muscle cramps and even cardiac arrhythmia.
A magnesium deficiency is rather rare with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle because magnesium is present in sufficient quantities in many plant and animal foods.
However, a deficiency can occur if certain factors are present, such as gastrointestinal complaints (acute diarrhea, vomiting), kidney disease, chronic alcohol consumption or the regular use of certain medications such as diuretics.
Athletes can also be affected by an inadequate intake. During physical activity, the body can lose more magnesium through sweat and urine. Magnesium is important for muscle function and energy production. During intensive training or endurance sports (e.g. running, cycling), magnesium stores can be depleted more quickly, which can lead to weakness and fatigue.
A high intake of calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, manganese and zinc through dietary supplements can impair the absorption of magnesium, therefore please do not take together. However, this has no effect on the absorption of magnesium if the intake is from food.
