L-lysine is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce itself and must therefore be ingested with food. In comparison to the other 6 amino acids designated as essential, lysine (as well as threonine) cannot be synthesised endogenously from the corresponding keto acids. L-lysine is therefore absolutely essential. In certain situations, such as intensive training, it therefore makes sense to supplement L-lysine with appropriate food supplements.
L-lysine is a component of collagen, where it occurs as "hydroxylysine". Collagen is an essential building material of connective tissue (in bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments) and the skin. A lysine deficiency therefore leads to weakened connective tissue. Furthermore, lysine ensures a functioning immune defence and is of particular importance as a precursor of carnitine. Carnitine plays an important role in energy and fat metabolism, as it transports fatty acids into the mitochondria.
