The non-proteinogenic amino acid is produced by the body itself and is important for the metabolism. As an intermediate product in the urea cycle, it plays a role in the breakdown of toxic ammonia into urea. In the process, L-citrulline is converted into L-arginine, which is the precursor of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in vasodilatation.
